As a follow up to my last post I wanted to offer some suggestions for alternative programs which can be used in place of FrontPage. The first question is, why move from FrontPage? The reason is that this is very old software which has not been updated in a few years. Microsoft is no longer supporting FrontPage and is it quickly becoming out of date. It does not function as it should on the new servers because of the lack of updates. With the move to Windows 2008 server and IIS7, it's a good time to start planning your move away from FrontPage.
That you will need to keep in mind is that any of the new tools which are available to help you work on your site will not support FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE). If you have a guestbook or other sections of your site which use FPSE, you need to keep in mind that component of your site will need to be re-built using the new tool of your choice.
Microsoft has released a new product, called Expression Web 2, which is the professional web design tool replacing FrontPage. There is a lot of information about this product on their site. You can also access tutorials and a trial version of the software. Some other tools from Microsoft which you can use can be found here.
Some of these tools are a little more advanced then FrontPage, one of the tools which I have used and is free is Visual Web Developer 2008. This is a great tool if you have some programming experience. Another tool which many of our clients use is Dreamweaver, this is another powerful tool which is more advanced than FrontPage. Dreamweaver has been on the market for many years and there are a number of templates users have created that you can download and work with to get you started. You can download a trial copy of Dreamweaver and access tutorials from Adobe.
We also offer a site builder tool which you can use to build your site on any of our web hosting servers. This can be a good tool to help you get a site up on the new servers while you learn and work with your new design tool. You can use site builder for free to set up a 3 page web site. You can click through and choose a template, enter your text and publish the site in no time to keep up a professional web presence while you construct your full site using your tool of choice. If you find that you are happy with the site builder tool you can upgrade it to a higher plan which will allow you to add more pages and features. Site builder will also help you set up a splash page.
You will need to keep in mind that each web site is different, moving from a Windows 2003 server to a Windows 2008 server will not be the same for every site, as there are a number of factors involved. Our Customer Support Department has helped many clients make the move over to the new servers while keeping downtime to a bare minimum. Once you ready to move over to the new platform please contact email@example.com to help get you started.
